Two other class III IF proteins, nestin and vimentin, dominate in immature astrocytes, while GFAP is most abundant in mature astrocytes (3). GFAP is used as a marker to distinguish astrocytes form other glial cells during development. Mutations in GFAP cause Alexander disease, a rare disorder of the CNS. Most frequent mutations are located at Arginine 79 or 239 (4).
